India post vs private courier

Companies in India prefer the option which offers safe and timely delivery of goods

According to a recently conducted survey, three out of five internet users in India prefer to shop online instead of visiting departmental stores or shopping malls. People buy these goods from manufacturers’ websites, or from various shopping portals like- eBay, amazon, flipkart, zansaar, etc. These shopping portals deliver goods right at the customer’s doorstep.

What would be beneficial for a company, India post service or private courier service? Let’s take a look at some of the points to differentiate between India post and private courier service providers in India.

  • Reach

India post is way too ahead of courier service providers as far as reach (delivery areas) is concerned. Both, India post and courier service providers have almost same number of offices in big cities, or tier 2 or 3 towns. However, India post operates 1.39 lakh rural post offices, and has around four lakh rural postal workers. India post has almost reached out to each and every corner of the country. On the other hand, private courier industry has a limited presence in India’s rural areas and almost no presence in remote areas. This is the reason that some of the companies, whose customers are in rural areas, prefer sending goods and documents using India post rather than courier service providers.

  • Safe and secured delivery

As far as delivery of goods is concerned, companies always prefer private courier service providers as courier service providers offer safe and timely delivery of goods.

Courier service providers offer free reports about the status of delivery of goods to the sender and also offer text messages and email alerts to the receiver of goods. Almost all the courier service providers offer website support to their customers. Both, the sender and receiver can track the goods using courier service provider’s website. India post offers services like speed post, and business post service for safe and secured delivery of goods. They also offer delivery reports and alerts , but very less companies are opting for their services because of India post’s past reputation and poor service record.

  • Pricing

India post offers services at cheaper rates compared to courier service providers. A courier service provider will charge around Rs 100 to send an envelope which weighs 100 grams to Chennai. You can send the same envelop to the same destination in just Rs 40 by using India post’s speed post service. India post offers services at almost half price compared to courier service providers.

  • India post is way too ahead of courier service providers as far as reach is concerned
  • Companies always prefer private courier service providers as courier service providers offer safe and timely delivery of goods.
  • As far as charges are concerned, India post offers services at cheaper rates compared to courier service.

  1. India post also offers online tracking system. It also offers text message alerts. It’s tracking system is ‘way’ better than most of the private courier companies. It gives detailed and accurate information about the parcel.

    • Everyone has their own positive or negative experience. I visit some interior parts of Konkan region, trust me, there is no courier service provider’s office in that part of Konkan. The only option is India post, and people are happy with it. So, this story’s conclusion is also neutral 🙂
