Spain National police’s social media manager Carlos Fernández Guerra recently made it in the headlines as he has moved to energy company, Iberdrola.

Spain’s National Police’s Twitter account- @policia has become a case study for individuals studying successful online awareness campaigns. The handle aims to share police stories, run awareness campaigns, and to take people’s input in order to solve cases. The account is operational since March 2009, and has nearly 1.78 million followers, around half million more than followers on FBI’s account.

Experts believe that the links for videos containing footage from police raids have helped the team to win more followers. People also get the opportunity to interact with the team and get answers for their doubts. Believe it or not, but tips received from this Twitter account have helped the police to catch as many as 500 narcotic offenders. This has also forced police to carry their smart phones and tablets while in action.

Now that Carlos Fernández Guerra is out of the team, let’s hope that National Police ropes in new minds to drive their account and keep it ahead of FBI.
