As pointed out in several studies, “A woman in an influential position is more likely to help a needy person than a man.” And here’s how I recently experienced it.

In one of my recent posts, I had covered how life has been cruel to me during the last eight months. With both personal and professional fronts gone for a toss, I was slowly slipping into anxiety and depression. I already suffer from high blood pressure to make matters worse.

Since February this year, I have probably emailed my CV to fifty companies. And used more than 50 messages and comments on LinkedIn. The situation was such that I questioned my capabilities as a writer, and thought of joining somewhere as a security guard.

(LinkedIn demotivates a lot. It is not an employment-related networking platform. Instead, it has turned into a network where you can spend some time, apply for jobs, and regret it later. Anyway, I will write a dedicated post on Five Reasons for Job Seekers to Stay Away from LinkedIn. And let’s get back to the main topic).

So, after sending these fifty-plus emails to companies and wasting time on LinkedIn, I thought about messaging a very big, very influential Hindi film director. He is a big brand, knows many powerful people, and politicians. Thus, I thought he could help me find new projects. He promised all the help, but never messaged back. I guess he must be busy with his upcoming film script.

The Godfather Doesn’t Need to Be a Millionaire

After failing to see any positive outcome, I thought about connecting with my old colleagues. And I messaged my former reporting manager, Rutva Mankodi. I was a part of her team while working as a writer with Ahmedabad-based Ecosmob Technologies. My content style and quality were good back then. The only concern was that I had missed a few deadlines. But later, the organization hired in-house writers post the pandemic, and that’s when they paused my work. Thus, there was no hesitation in my mind to approach my former manager.

I got in touch, elaborated the situation, and requested that she help me get out of this dead-end-like situation due to a lack of work. Luckily, she had some projects where I could fit in.

So, on one side, this extraordinarily rich gentleman did not even respond to my message. And I have impressed him, promoted his work, with several of my blog posts, all for free. He could have just messaged two to three of his contacts to help me get a project from PR firms. On the other hand, there’s my former manager, who helped me with work within a week after I messaged her.

A Certificate of Relevance

Thanks to Rutva Mankodi, I got the opportunity to work on something in B2B, after quite a while, I must confess. Fortunately, the work was approved by the client as well.

During the last few months, I was feeling hopeless. I spent most of my day taking care of my bedridden mother and cursing my luck.

(I take care of my mother between 7:30 AM and 4 PM. Then, work from 4 PM onward when my younger brother returns home from his hospital).

I even questioned my professional capabilities and experience. But, once these four pages were written, submitted, and approved, I started to feel unburdened, as if a load had lifted from my soul. It was a certificate of relevance, professionally. Now, I can shout, “I lacked opportunities all these months and not capabilities.”

The “Godfather” Spirit Knows No Gender

The fact is, all of us need a Godfather in life. Someone with whom you can connect in case of trouble and seek assistance. And over the years, I have learned that this Godfather spirit knows no gender. It knows neither wealth. It is all about the willingness to help. For me, it is people like Rutva Mankodi who are a Godfather figure.

As pointed out in several studies, “A woman in an influential position is more likely to help a needy person than a man.”

Note: By Godfather, I mean someone who is like a mentor, influential guide, or protector. And this has nothing to do with the fictional crime boss.
