A Pahalgam attack survivor was told by the terrorist that she was being spared so she could narrate the horrors to Prime Minister Modi. And this explicit mention marks a significant change in the tactics used by militant groups in Jammu and Kashmir. The act has also shattered Kashmir’s emergence as India’s new tourism hotspot.

The Pahalgam attack was not just an act of terror but a terrorist attack on the soul of the valley. So far, 26 individuals lost their lives while several are reported to be injured. A little-known militant group, the Kashmir Resistance, has accepted responsibility for the attack. It is the second biggest terror incident after the Pulwama attack, faced by the Union Territory since 2019. Yet, the Pahalgam attack stands out due to the explicit reference made by terrorists to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During this attack, militants from The Resistance Front targeted tourists. They also said their intention is to target 85,000 settlers from outside the state who intend to change the region’s demographics.

“The terrorist said, Modi is attacking Muslims, defaming Muslims. And you are supporting Modi,” said one of the victims who shared the ordeal with journalists in Maharashtra

Did terrorists directly invoke the prime minister’s name in any earlier attacks?

No prime minister’s name was ever invoked in the context of attacks that took place earlier. This explicit mention marks a significant escalation in the rhetoric and tactics employed by militant groups in the region.

This attack marked several first-time occurrences:

  • Attackers confirmed their victims’ religious identities before firing bullets.
  • Local civilians immediately stepped in to help the victims after the attack.
  • Locals have hit the streets in large numbers to protest against the attack and condemn it.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah immediately rushed to the union territory to personally assess the ground situation. He also met the victims at various hospitals.
