“If you’re going to hell why not visit Saudi? So when you’re there you could say I’ve been through worse,”- said one activist, on Malak Al Shehri’s arrest for posing without hijab.

The ultra-conservative Muslim nation, Saudi Arabia, often makes it in the headlines either because of its Islamic clerics who issue ridiculous fatwas or because of their anti-women policies. To put it in simple words, women are often treated as second-class citizens in Saudi.

Since the last two days, the country’s religious police are attracting lot ire from people around the world as they have detained a 21-year-old girl-Malak Al Shehri (some reports claim she is 30).

Now, you might think she was taken in custody for her involvement in serious crime. Get ready for another surprise from Saudi! Malak Al Shehri was arrested because she dared to click her photograph in decent ankle-length orange and pink dress along with a black jacket. Her fault was that she posed without wearing hijab. The concerned picture was clicked on one of Riyadh’s popular streets.

Since sharing this picture on social networking sites, the girl in question has received several death threats. People in Saudi are also demanding that the government should execute her. According to reports, she may face sentence involving lashes.

Reports about her arrest were published in Saudi newspapers. Cops who interacted with local journalists suggest that the concerned girl had posed for the picture as part of a challenge that she had announced on social network site few days back.

This is another shocker from the country where rape victims receive harsher punishment than rapists. They punish activists, bloggers and everyone who criticizes Islam as well as the religious establishment.

Let’s see how Twitter reacted to this incident-
